infant chiropractic in atlanta: what it is, what it isn’t, and why parents ask us about it

Let's start with the image in your head, because we know what it is: an adult-style "cracking" adjustment performed on a tiny baby. If that's what's keeping you from calling us, let us put your mind at ease right now.

That is not what happens here. Not even close.

An infant adjustment at Midtown Family Wellness looks like this: a baby lying comfortably — sometimes nursing, sometimes sleeping — while a chiropractor uses fingertip pressure to check the spine and nervous system. Dr. D describes it the way she's described it for years: it's like checking the ripeness of a peach or an avocado. That's the amount of force involved. We don't muscle adjustments. We finesse them — and with babies, there's almost nothing to muscle.

Why parents bring their babies to us

Parents find us for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes it's a specific concern — colic, trouble latching, torticollis (a tight neck that keeps the baby preferring one side), or an uneventful-at-the-time birth that was actually pretty eventful for the baby's neck and spine. Sometimes it's simpler: they were adjusted through their own pregnancy at our perinatal practice, and they want the same support for their newborn.

And sometimes it's the most honest reason of all: they're exhausted, the baby is fussy, and someone they trust said "just go talk to Dr. D."

All of those are good reasons to walk through our door. Here's our promise about what happens next: we listen first. We'll ask about the pregnancy, the birth, feeding, sleep, and what's worrying you. No judgment — not about your birth choices, your feeding choices, or the fact that you're running on three hours of sleep. Ever.

What the research actually says

We believe you deserve the truth, including the complicated parts. So here's where the science stands on infant chiropractic:

A Cochrane review — one of the most rigorous types of evidence synthesis — looked at manipulative therapies for infantile colic and found the existing studies too small and methodologically weak to draw confident conclusions about effectiveness or safety. A 2021 randomized, blinded trial on chiropractic care for colicky infants found that the adjusted difference in crying time was not statistically significant.

We're telling you this because it's the truth, and because we'd rather earn your trust with honesty than with promises we can't keep. What we won't tell you: that an adjustment will make colic disappear, resolve reflux, or guarantee better sleep. Any practitioner who promises that is selling you something.

What we can tell you is what we've observed across seventeen years of pediatric care in Atlanta: babies are remarkably responsive to gentle input, parents consistently report that their babies seem more comfortable and settled, and our practice has grown largely on the word of moms and dads who watched it happen. The ICPA maintains a research library on pediatric chiropractic for parents who want to read further, and their safety information addresses common questions head-on.

What a first visit looks like

If you bring your baby to us, here's what to expect — because we know the unknown is the scariest part.

First, we talk. About your pregnancy, your birth, your baby's patterns, and what's on your mind. The consultation is the longest part of the visit, on purpose.

Then, with your baby comfortable — in your arms, on the table, nursing if that's what's happening — Dr. D or one of our pediatric-trained chiropractors gently assesses the spine, cranium, and nervous system. If an adjustment is indicated, it's the peach-and-avocado kind: light, specific, and over in moments. Many babies sleep through it. Some don't notice at all.

Our office helps, too. This is an open, warm space where kids are welcome to be kids — where a toddler might be playing nearby while your newborn is assessed. The room is part of the practice. You'll see other families, hear other babies, and probably feel your shoulders drop about ten minutes after you arrive.

Every doctor on our team is trained in pediatric contexts — this isn't a general practice that occasionally sees kids. Dr. D holds her DACCP (Diplomate in Chiropractic Pediatrics), and pediatric care has been central to this practice since 2009.

When to call your pediatrician first

We're part of your child's care team, not a replacement for it. Call your pediatrician right away — before booking with us — if your baby has:

  • Fever (100.4°F / 38°C or higher in an infant under 3 months is an emergency)
  • Poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or difficulty waking
  • Persistent vomiting or signs of dehydration
  • A bulging fontanelle (soft spot), unusual crying, or any sudden change in behavior
  • Any injury from a fall or accident

This article is education, not medical advice. If something feels wrong, trust your instincts and call your pediatrician. We'll be here when you're ready.

Bring everyone you love

That's what we tell our wellness families — the parents who come for themselves and end up bringing the kids, the partner, the grandmother. They come for an adjustment and stay for the village.

If you're curious about infant chiropractic, the best next step is a conversation. Start your care with us — come in, ask us everything, and watch what a pediatric adjustment actually looks like before you decide anything. No pressure. That's not how we do things.
